Essential Gear Checklist

  • Sturdy hiking boots (broken in)
  • Moisture-wicking base layers
  • Insulating mid-layer (fleece or down)
  • Waterproof rain jacket and pants
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+) and lip balm
  • Reusable water bottle (1-2L)
  • High-energy snacks and lunch
  • First aid kit and personal medications
  • Headlamp with extra batteries

Best Seasons & Weather

  • Summer (June-September): Peak hiking season, warm days, cool nights. Wildflowers bloom in July-August.
  • Fall (September-October): Stunning larch trees turn golden. Cooler temperatures, fewer crowds.
  • Winter (November-March): Snowshoeing and ice walks. Dress in layers, expect -10°C to -25°C.
  • Spring (April-May): Trails may be muddy or snow-covered. Check conditions before booking.
  • Weather changes rapidly in mountains - always bring extra layers
  • Afternoon thunderstorms common in summer

Fitness Preparation

  • Easy trails: Basic fitness, comfortable walking 3-5 km
  • Moderate trails: Regular exercise, able to hike 5-10 km with elevation gain
  • Hard trails: Strong fitness, experience with multi-day backpacking and steep terrain
  • Start training 4-6 weeks before your trip
  • Practice hiking with a loaded backpack
  • Build cardiovascular endurance with stairs or hills
  • Stay hydrated and acclimatize to altitude

Bear & Wildlife Safety

  • Make noise on trails - talk, clap, or use bear bells
  • Hike in groups and stay on marked trails
  • Carry bear spray and know how to use it
  • Never approach or feed wildlife
  • Store food properly in bear-proof containers
  • If you see a bear: stay calm, speak calmly, back away slowly
  • Grizzly and black bears are active May-October
  • Watch for elk, moose, and mountain goats - give them space
